In 1951, Jay Harper and his wife Virginia founded Jay’s Moving Company. Their “boardroom” was their kitchen table and they were the only two employees. They had just a few customers and their mission was to do their very best for their customers, every time, at the fairest price they could deliver.
Jay and Virginia founded their new business on the Christian principles of humility, honesty, integrity, generosity of spirit, and love for their community. As the community embraced their new business, the company soon outgrew the Harper’s kitchen. In 1973, they opened their first office in Fountain Square.
In a testament to his commitment to hard work and lifelong service, Jay continued to grow the business and serve the community until he retired at the age of 80. Jay passed away in 2008, leaving the legacy of his family business in the hands of a team who also believes in careful stewardship and humble service.
In 2015, Jay’s purchased the Indianapolis based moving company Moving Dawgs, from the operators of Fire Dawgs Junk Removal.
In January, 2017, Jay’s Moving Company acquired Colen Moving and Storage, a United Van Lines agent, in Fort Wayne. Colen Moving and Storage has been serving the Fort Wayne community since 1958 with the same values and strong work ethic that Jay Harper established for his business in 1951, so it was a perfect match. Additionally, the partnership with United Van Lines has allowed Jay’s Moving Company to serve their customers even better by expanding into cross-country moves.
Jay’s serves with the same high standards and commitment to honesty, integrity that Jay Harper established more than sixty years ago. We are Hoosiers serving Hoosiers, and proud to do so.
